Teacher Training in England and Wales : Past , Present and Future Perspectives

Wendy Robinson University if Exeter 19 Policy, theory and practice in initial teacher education in England has a long history if turbulence. This paper riflects upon this history and examines those key aspects if initial teacher education which have shaped pas~ present and foture developments. Following a brig historical overview if key developments in the field, the issue if where best to train the teacher in school or in an HE! is considered. Then, the content if training, and those qualities and skills most desired in the new teacher are discussed. Finally, there is some informed speculation about possible future developments in teacher training in the rapidly changing world if the twenty-first century.
